Cleaning and Maintaining Urinals fitted with UMDs
Waterless and Low-Flushing |
 |
Urinal Maintenance Devices work microbiologically to help counter problems caused by uric acid salts and limescale. For the UMDs to remain effective it is very important to follow these guidelines:-
Regular Cleaning
Urinals fitted with UMDs are usually set to be flushed once every 4 to 12 hours or not flushed at all (i.e. waterless). Regular cleaning of the bowls is important.
-
REMOVE DEBRIS, including chewing gum, cigarette ends, paper etc from the urinal bowls. To avoid blockages, do not encourage debris into the urinal drain.
-
SPRAY OVER THE SURFACES WITH A COMPATIBLE CLEANER. Pay particular attention to the underside of the bowl where stale urine splashes and becomes a breeding ground for the bacteria which cause urinal odours.
Gentworks Bio-Blue is ideal for cleaning urinals as it works in harmony with the material contained in the UMD unit.
Gentworks Bactericidal Cleaner is also recommended when used in a dilution of 9 parts water to 1 part chemical but should not be used neat. Other recommended products are Zybax Odourmaster and Q-Bio Odourblaster. Other neutral (pH=7) hard surface cleaners may do no harm.
-
WIPE SURFACES clean of any excess cleaning solution to avoid staining.
|
Weekly Dosing (applicable to waterless use only)
Some debris, especially hair, will inevitably fall into the urinal waste, so the weekly dosing procedure is critical to preventing blockages when UMDs are used waterless (i.e. zero flushing). For each and every bowl fitted with a UMD….

Quarterly UMD Cartridge Change

Approximately every 13 weeks, the old UMD cartridge should be changed. Wearing a suitable disposable glove, pull the used cartridge upwards and dispose of safely. Then insert a new UMD, rotating the cartridge until the groove is aligned with the lug in the waste outlet. The cartridge should sit neatly and securely in the bowl. |
|
VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE INCOMPATIBLE CHEMICALS AS THESE ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE ODOURS AND BLOCKAGES
DO NOT USE TRADITIONAL URINAL BLOCKS – These may contain chemicals that will destroy the microbiological action from the material in the Gentworks UMD.
DO NOT USE ACID or BLEACH. Products with a phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, chlorine or bleach base will also kill the microbiological activity, resulting in odours and blockages. In the event that the use of acid is required, the UMD cartridge MUST first be removed. Before the UMD cartridge is replaced, it is vital to ensure that the acid is neutralised. To do this, sluice urinal with several litres of water. |
